How the Labor Union Movement got started
First, we are going to mention what Labor Unions are. Labor Unions are groups that bring people from various jobs in order to protest for better rights and wages. This is essentially how these Labor Groups started.
In the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution came along and it brought new jobs in manufacturing such as working in the factories. Many workers switched from agricultural to rural and worked in these factories. Working here has brought harsh conditions upon them. They had health risks, and low pay. Even worse, children and women worked in these factories which provided danger for them. They also got less pay than men. This soon led to some of the first labor unions in the United States. People demanded better rights and better conditions. A method they used was striking. Striking is when a group of people stop working to protest to try and get better rights.
Here is a quote by Philip Taft - "For the first time in peacetime history, union organizations had the attention and approval of the Federal Government." - Philip Taft
This quote's purpose is to show that these Labor Union Organizations were getting attention so the peoples voices were heard. The more they protested and did these groups, the more the government started to notice.
