The American Federation of Labor
The American Federation of Labor was brought about by Samuel L. Gompers in 1886. This goal of this Labor Union group was to bring together many different kinds of Labor Groups and have them be together. Together this group became one of the most major union groups in America.
Here's a small excerpt from a letter sent by Samuel Gompers (The American Federation of Labor) sent to a "Bishop". The title of this letter is "A letter to a Bishop". Here is the excerpt. "Are labor unions a threat to America? By early 1920, amidst paralyzing strikes and the postwar Red Scare, the answer for many Americans was "yes." In a rousing address in Baltimore, Bishop William Quayle of the Methodist Episcopal Church accused the labor movement of threatening the "very existence of our republican form of government," a charge leveled by many critics at the time"
This letter's purpose is Samuel Gompers trying to convince the "Bishop" that Labor Unions aren't a threat to the republican form of government. The government thinks that the Labor Unions are bad because of events like the Hay Market Riot, and The Red Scare. Samuel Gompers is trying to say that Labor Unions aren't as much as the government says they are.
Here is a quote by Samuel Gompers saying how to make the unions good. " 1876: ...[T]o effect any good by our Unions, we must bring all elements working in our trade into one Organization, for the wrongs heaped upon one element today are merely the precursor for another to morrow. (Vol. 1: SG to George Hurst, Jan. 22, 1876) ". What he is saying here is that to get a great Union, we must all work together because the wrongs that can happen today will show up tomorrow. It's this type of thinking that Gompers has that has the potential to get the Labor Unions great. It's because of this reason alone that the American federation of Labor is one of the greatest Labor Union groups. It even exists today as the AFL-CIO.
